- A technologist will escort you to an MRI room and have you lie on a padded table. You'll see a large donut-shaped device called a gantry.
- You will be asked to lie very still during the exam and depending upon the type of exam, you may be asked to hold your breath to minimize any body motion or movement.
- An MRI machine is equipped with a powerful magnet. Because of that, we ask that you do not wear anything that has metal on it (zippers, buttons, etc.). You also have the option of changing into a robe, provided by our facility, for the scan. If you wear jewelry, you can take it off and put it in a secure locker prior to going into the scanner.
- MR testing is painless and much quicker than you might think. The actual scan portion of the exam takes only a few minutes, but each exam is made up of a sequence of scans that vary from study to study. With our new Signa HDx 3.0T MR from GE, most scans will average 15-20 minutes, much shorter in duration than current technology.
- During the scan, you will hear loud humming, buzzing and/or tapping sounds as images are being taken. In between scans, the machine is quiet.
- Video goggles and headphones are available during the scan and you are welcome to bring your own DVDs, CDs or even your iPOD. You will not feel anything unusual except possibly a light vibration.
- The technologist will monitor you during the entire exam and will communicate with you through the headphones.
- After the exam, a radiologist will carefully analyze your MRI images, review the findings with your physician and provide a report. HAII is committed to getting your report back to your physician within 24 hours or less. Your physician will then discuss results with you.
