PATIENT PREPARATION FOR PET/CT

In order to perform the PET-CT correctly, it is essential for patients to follow the instructions listed below.

• There will be a confirmation call prior to your appointment.
• Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions in regards to preparation or your appointment at Hawaii Advanced Imaging Institute (808) 591-1504.

ESSENTIAL PATIENT PREPARATION
  1. Patient Preparation:
    1. You cannot have any carbohydrates/starches (such as rice, potatoes, breads, pasta, etc.; also, no vegetables and fruits) by your last meal before your appointment.
      1. If your procedure is before 12:00 p.m., the last meal before the procedure should be no later than7:00 p.m.
      2. If your procedure is after 12:00 p.m. the last meal before the procedure should be no later than 6:00 a.m.

      You may eat beef, chicken, pork and fish that is baked, broiled or boiled. Use only salt, pepper, and lemon juice for spices (do not use any sauces). Do not fry.

    2. You must drink WATER when taking your daily medications. You may continue to drink water up until your procedure.
    3. Low blood sugar is essential for a successful scan. You should not eat or drink alcohol, coffee, flavored water, ENSURE, chewing gum, diet sodas, etc.

  2. Time: you will be at Hawaii Advanced Imaging Institute for approximately 2 hours. We will validate your parking for 2 1/2 hours at the Restaurant Row parking garage.

  3. Diabetic Patients
    1. Oral Medications: please take your medications before you come in.
    2. Insulin-dependent: please take half of your morning dosage.

  4. Injection: you will receive an intravenous injection of a small amount of radioglucose using a very small needle.

  5. EXERCISE: PLEASE DO NOT EXERCISE VIGOROUSLY THE DAY BEFORE OR THE DAY OF YOUR SCAN

  6. Clothing: wear comfortable, warm, loose-fitting clothing. Metal in clothing or metal jewelry will have to be removed before the scan. Please do not bring any valuable items.

  7. Previous scans: Neighbor island patients must bring latest CT scans which will be used for comparison with the PET-CT scan..

  8. Pregnancy: PET/CT is not performed on pregnant patients.

  9. Breast-feeding: please do not breast feed for 24 hours after the scan.

  10. Prior allergic reaction to I.V. contrast: if you are receiving a diagnostic CT scan, please contact your physician if you are allergic to I.V. contrast before coming to us. Your physician will have you on medication before the diagnostic CT is performed.

  11. IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT, PLEASE CALL US THE DAY BEFORE TO CANCEL YOUR SCAN. Should you fail to cancel your appointment, YOU WILL BE CHARGED the full amount of $450 for the FDG Radiopharmaceutical dose that is made especially for you. We cannot save your FDG dose for another day because it only lasts less than 4 hours.
