The highly sensitive PET scan is able to detect the metabolic signal of actively growing cancer cells in the body while the CT scan can provide a detailed picture of the internal anatomy that reveals the location, size and shape of abnormal cancerous growths.

Although each imaging test has its own benefits, a combined or "fused" PET/CT image provides a more complete picture of cancer location and metabolism.

At Hawaii Advanced Imaging, we offer the advantage of having both scans: PET and CT- done at the same time with our unique GEMINI GXL system. For oncology exams in particular, our PET and multi-slice CT components are used together to track conditions and give your doctor a greater level of diagnostic confidence.

Major benefits of combined PET/CT:

Most accurate noninvasive test for staging and localization of cancer.

Can detect clusters of tumor cells that have taken hold in other tissues or organs in the body.

May provide earlier diagnosis and even prevent unnecessary biopsies in some patients.

Able to detect cancer when other imaging techniques show normal results.

  Reduced patient scan times.

Diagnostic CT's with contrast are also available for in conjunction with PET/CT for:

  Therapy monitoring

  Suspected recurrent disease
